Why Does My Furnace Trip the Breaker in Prescott?

Furnace Trip the Breaker

You reset the breaker, the furnace fired back up, and for about ten minutes you thought you’d fixed it. Then the house went quiet again. I get this call a lot once Prescott starts dropping below freezing at night, and the cause varies more than people expect. Here are four I ran into last winter, because the way your furnace trips says a lot about why.

It Trips the Moment You Flip It Back

The first one was a house off Rocky Dells Drive. The owner had reset the breaker twice, and both times it snapped off before the furnace got through its startup. He’d already bought a new breaker at the hardware store and had it sitting on the dryer when I walked in.

He didn’t need it. When a furnace can trip the breaker that fast, it’s almost always a dead short or a seized motor, and his was the inducer motor, the little fan that clears exhaust before the burners light. The shaft wouldn’t budge. New motor, about an hour and a half.

Sometimes it’s wiring instead. A mouse-chewed lead or a cooked connector will do the same thing, and you won’t know which until somebody puts a meter on it.

It Runs a While, Then Trips

A woman off Iron Springs Road called about the opposite problem. Her furnace ran fine for fifteen minutes or so and then would trip the breaker, and she’d been resetting it every morning for a week. “I figured it was just the cold,” she told me.

It was the run capacitor on her blower motor. That’s the small metal can that gives the motor its push. Hers tested at less than half its rating, so the motor strained every cycle and heated up until it pulled enough current to trip the breaker. I swapped it in about forty minutes.

She’d also heard squealing from the furnace closet back in October. That’s usually bearings, and the motor itself is next if it keeps up. Newer variable-speed motors don’t use a capacitor at all, so on those the fix looks different.

Why These Calls Pile Up in NovemberElectrical Circuit Breaker Panel

Prescott sits at about 5,400 feet, and once nights drop below freezing, a furnace that barely ran in October is suddenly going an hour at a time. Anything already weak gets found out in the first cold week.

Some of the damage happens months earlier. A homeowner off Idylwild Road had lightning hit a pine across the street during the August monsoons. Nothing seemed wrong at the time. In November the furnace started to trip the breaker partway through long cycles, and it turned out the surge had damaged the blower motor’s windings without killing them outright.

If your trouble started after a big storm, mention it when you call. It changes what we check first.

When the Furnace Isn’t the Problem

The last one was on Buttermilk Road, in an older home where the furnace shared a circuit with the garage. The breaker only went on the coldest mornings. Took me a minute to see the pattern. The husband’s space heater in the garage was plugged into that same circuit, and with the furnace running, the two of them pulled enough to trip the breaker.

There was nothing wrong with the furnace at all. Current code puts central heating on its own dedicated circuit, and in Prescott, adding one means pulling an electrical permit through the city. We ran a new circuit and the tripping stopped.

Checking what else shares that breaker is something you can do yourself. Opening the furnace cabinet isn’t, because there’s live voltage in there even with the burners off.

Before You Reset It Again

Every reset sends full current back into whatever’s failing, and that’s how a forty-minute capacitor job turns into a new blower motor. Allied Electric does furnace repair all over Prescott, and we check the furnace and the circuit it’s on. It’s good to have an ally when the house is losing heat by the hour.

Furnace Breaker FAQAllied Electrical tech speaking with homeowner

How many times can I reset it before i should worry

Once. Change the filter first, since a clogged one makes the blower run hot. If it trips again after that, leave it off and call.

Can a dirty filter make my furnace trip the breaker

Not by itself, usually. It makes the blower work harder, and that can push a weak motor over the edge. Prescott’s dry, dusty air clogs filters faster than you’d expect, so check yours monthly in winter.

How long does furnace repair take for this kind of thing

Depends on the cause. A capacitor is usually under an hour, and an inducer or blower motor is closer to two. A wiring short can take longer.

Is it the breaker thats bad

Sometimes, mostly in older panels. We check the furnace’s amp draw first. If it’s normal and the furnace still manages to trip the breaker, the breaker gets replaced.

Why would it trip the breaker every single morning

Mornings are when the furnace runs longest, so a weak motor or capacitor has the most time to overheat. It’s also when space heaters come on, which matters if they share the circuit. One visit usually sorts it out.

If it’s already tripped twice today, leave it off and put on a sweater. We’ll take it from there.
