
The AC’s been running since noon. The house still sits at 82. Air limping out of the vents feels weak, almost lukewarm, and when you pull the access panel off the indoor unit there’s frost sitting where frost has no business being. Cranking the thermostat down another five degrees won’t help. It’ll make it worse. Here’s what’s actually going on inside that unit.
Ice Forms When the Coil Runs Too Cold
The Evaporator Coil lives in the indoor half of your system. Refrigerant moves through it, the blower pulls warm house air across it, and the coil strips heat out of that air before it heads back through your ducts.
Moisture comes along for the ride. Humidity condenses on the cold coil surface, drips into the drain pan, and exits through the condensate line. Ordinary stuff.
Trouble starts when that surface drops below 32 degrees. Condensation freezes in place instead of draining, and a thin skin of frost turns into a restriction. Less air across the Evaporator Coil means it gets colder still, which grows more ice. I’ve pulled panels and found three inches of solid ice wrapped around the fins.
A little frost on a muggy August afternoon isn’t automatic proof of failure. Frost that’s still there an hour later is.
Airflow Is the First Thing I Check
Most of the freeze-ups I see trace back to a filter nobody’s touched in five months.
A homeowner off Willow Creek Road called last July convinced her compressor was finished. Her filter had gone in sometime around tax season and looked like a piece of felt. Twelve dollars and a three-hour thaw later, she was cooling fine.
Prescott loads filters faster than people expect. We sit above 5,000 feet with dry, windy springs, ponderosa pollen, and construction dust that never fully settles. A one-inch pleated filter rated for 90 days can be finished in 45 up here.
Blocked return grilles do the same damage so do registers closed off in a spare bedroom, a blower wheel caked with dust, or flex duct that got crushed in the crawlspace. Check the filter first. If it’s clean and the coil still ices over, something deeper is going on.
Low Refrigerant Usually Means a Leak
Refrigerant doesn’t burn off like gasoline. It’s a sealed loop. If the charge is low, it went somewhere.
Low charge drops the pressure inside the Evaporator Coil, which drops its temperature, which turns normal condensation into a sheet of ice. Same symptom as an airflow problem, completely different repair.
Adding refrigerant without finding the leak buys you a few weeks, maybe a season on a slow one. Then you’re back to a frozen unit and another bill.
The honest part: leak searches aren’t always fast. Sometimes an electronic detector finds it in twenty minutes at a flare fitting. Sometimes we inject dye, let the system run a couple weeks, and come back with a UV light. Anybody who promises a five-minute answer on a slow leak is guessing.
What to Do the Moment You See Ice
Set the system to OFF and the fan to ON. Room-temperature air moving across the coil thaws it faster than just shutting everything down.
Don’t chip at it. Those fins are thin aluminum and the refrigerant lines are soft copper — a screwdriver turns a service call into a coil replacement, and replacing an air handler in the City of Prescott means pulling a mechanical permit on top of the parts cost.
Give it two to six hours depending on how thick the ice got. Put towels around the base of the unit, because a heavily iced Evaporator Coil can dump a few gallons of water once it lets go.
If a filthy filter caused it, the system usually runs normally afterward. If it freezes a second time, stop restarting it and get it looked at.
Get It Diagnosed Before It Costs You a Compressor
Running a frozen system pushes liquid refrigerant back toward a compressor built to handle vapor. Our techs test the system instead of guessing at it static pressure, superheat, blower amp draw, coil condition. It’s good to have an ally when your AC decides to ice itself over in the middle of monsoon season.

Can I just run it until it thaws on its own?
No. Keep cooling on and you’ll starve the compressor for airflow and risk liquid refrigerant slugging it. Switch the system off, leave the fan running, and wait it out. That’s the cheapest thing you’ll do all week.
How long till the ice melts?
Light frost clears in under an hour. A fully encased coil can take five or six. Don’t aim a heat gun or hair dryer at it sudden heat on cold copper is a good way to crack a joint.
Does a frozen coil always mean I’m low on refrigerant?
Not at all. Restricted airflow causes freezing just as often, and a dirty blower wheel or collapsed duct will do it too. That’s why a real diagnosis beats a can of refrigerant.
Why does Prescott dust matter more than in Phoenix?
Lower humidity and constant fine grit up here means more airborne dust reaching the coil and less moisture washing it down. Dirty coil surfaces trap dust, and trapped dust restricts air the same way a clogged filter does.
It froze again a week later. Now what?
Thawing removes ice, not the cause. A repeat freeze points to a leak, a blower issue, or a duct restriction, and each of those needs an HVAC tech with gauges on the system rather than another round of guessing.
